What is an MC Number (Motor Carrier Number)?
The MC number is 6 digits long and assigned by the FMCSA to both carriers and brokers which gives them the authority (permission) to cross state lines with products, material, and more.
In the case of auto transport it is how auto transport brokers and auto transport carriers can ship vehicles from state to state.
The purpose of the MC Number is to assure brokers and carriers are allowed to cross state lines with cargo, and to account for who these companies are.
The FMCSA is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Although this number gives permission to the auto transport company to ship cars, it is not the only requisite. A broker bond is needed to secure carriers will receive payments for shipments assigned by brokers.
With the MC number anyone can look up the company snapshot provided by the FMCSA. It provides everything you need to know about the carrier or broker you’re looking up. It includes their operating status (if they are allowed to do business), their physical and mailing addresses, their DOT number and Inspections if they are a carrier.
