What does DIS/DLR/EXP ONLY mean?

At auto auctions like Copart, IAA (Insurance Auto Auctions), and others, you’ll sometimes see vehicles labeled DIS/DLR/EXP ONLY in the “Licensing Type” or “Buyer Type” column. This abbreviation typically means:

DIS = Dismantler License Only – the vehicle can only be purchased by a licensed dismantler (often for parts or scrap).

DLR = Dealer License Only – requires a licensed motor vehicle dealer to bid and buy.

EXP ONLY = Export Only – the vehicle is not eligible to be titled or registered for road use in the United States and must be exported out of the country.

Each Major Salvage Auction uses Similar Terms

Copart uses terms like “Dealer, Dismantler, Export Only” in the “Buyer Type” column.

IAA might say “Dismantler / Export” or “Licensed Buyer”.

Manheim or ACV Auctions use “Dealer Only” access to indicate restricted bidding.

Does DIS/DLR/EXP ONLY mean export only?

Not always. The EXP ONLY part is what specifically means the vehicle can’t be titled or registered in the U.S. If the listing just says DIS/DLR without EXP, it may be possible to title it domestically depending on your state’s rules and whether it’s rebuilt or salvage.

Can I Buy DIS/DLR/EXP ONLY With a Broker Like AutoBidMaster?

Yes — licensed brokers such as AutoBidMaster, A Better Bid, or Copart Broker Services can often place bids for you on restricted vehicles. However:

If the unit has Export Only, you will not be able to register it for U.S. road use. It will have to be shipped outside the U.S., or kept as parts/off-road use only. Even with a broker account, a DIS designation means it’s generally intended for dismantling, so a state title may not be issued.

Bottom Line:

DIS/DLR/EXP ONLY = highly restricted sale, often not registrable in the U.S.

A broker can buy it for you, but Export Only means you can’t just fix it and drive it here.

If you need a road-ready car, stick to listings marked as eligible for “Public” or “Clean/Salvage Title” buyers.
