Auction Says Clean Title But Report Says Salvaged?
It's not uncommon for a car to be listed with a clean title on Copart or IAA while a Carfax or AutoCheck report shows it as salvage. This inconsistency usually is a result as to the initial title information is reported and processed. Once the new title is processed to the buying party, the clean title status should report as clean.
What if After I Register my Clean Title it Still Reports Salvaged?
If the salvage branding was mistakenly applied (e.g., an insurance company reported it as a total loss but the DMV never issued a salvage title) YES, the history report can be corrected, but it requires proof from the DMV that the title is clean. After that, a correction request submitted to Carfax, AutoCheck, etc. Sometimes a letter from the insurance company clarifying the error can work.
Why Should I Correct It?
If you plan sell your car later and someone runs a report, they may not understand the salvage was reported in error. As a general reference, salvaged branded vehicles are worth about 25% less than clean title cars.
